Discover
Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

I'm a loyal Fairmont customer and try to stay on the Gold Floor when I can. At this hotel I especially liked the separate valet/check in for Gold Floor. Ate in three of the dining rooms - all were excellent in terms of food, service and ambience.
Check in process was excellent. We had the high tea, a bit pricey but worth the experience. We watched the hockey game in the lounge and had a blast with appetizers and drinks.
My husband and I recently stayed on the gold floor. I have many food allergies and it can be a challenge to prepare food at a restaurant or hotel that can meet those needs. After sharing my issues around 6 weeks prior to our stay, Chef Anthony took on this challenge with amazing attention to detail, including calling me in the US prior to our stay to talk about some ideas he had, meeting with us as soon as we arrived, and explaining the menu choices he had made to be sure it would all work. Not only did he have me covered at breakfast and the appetizer hour and dessert, he made full meals for dinner for me the three nights I was there, served along with my separate appetizers. The gold team lounge staff was also aware of the arrangement and all worked very well. I was able to relax and enjoy our time at the Banff Springs as I knew the food he prepared would not cause any allergic reactions. This is our fourth stay, and we were celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary….the staff surprised us with a signed card and a beautiful candle as a keepsake. It was a terrific experience on all fronts. Thank you!

I am so pleased with the assistance of the staff and especially the valets. My daughter's wedding was scheduled to be at the Tunnel Mountain Reservoir but the weather was very bad and thankfully the FBS were able to accommodate a request so she was able to have the ceremony in the Angus Room at a reasonable rate. Following the ceremony we had dinner in the Vermillion Room which was great as usual. Earlier we had convened in the Rundle Lounge for drinks and although the hotel had provided a complimentary bottle of champagne, the waiter still charged us $65.00 for it, which had to be corrected. Overall we loved our stay. I can say that it was the valets who stole the day however, they were AMAZING, polite, respectful and QUICK because we were squeezed for time on arrival and they were so very helpful. We have stayed at the FBS on many occasions and always enjoy the Castle -- so it was even more special that my daughter was able to have her wedding there as well. One negative -- we were given an early check-in for 11:30 a.m. (IF the rooms were available and ready) and although my daughter and her groom's room was ready early, mine was not ready until 4:15 p.m., but overall it was a minor thing and occurred after the ceremony so I just had to transfer my things from her room to mine. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The guests are friendly and it seems everyone is in a great mood at the FBS and it is easy to see why. We all love an elevated experience in luxurious surroundings!
